– Short Film music are different from album, EP or Mixtape songs. It doesn’t have to be only produced by inspiration or idea but also has to match with pictures, emotions, colours, genders and themes from the movie.

In this short film situation, music has a role more important because there is no dialog. By showing 5 different characters in the frame, the music has to match with pictures and emotions gave by the situations lived by the characters. This goal can’t miss; music cannot match with another emotion or it will be a failure.

Inspired by music like Motion by Rone, the goal is to have an evolving electro-orchestral music that can grow with the time to become more and more powerful, more emotional and have more instruments. The last wish from the director was to be able to keep the same principal melody to the entire short film. The principal melody can have 2 or 3 instruments and has to evolve with every emotion from scenes. The music should be different but have to keep the same principal melody.

The principal melody is played by the piano, an instrument able in one hand to be warm, be joyful but in another hand to be sad and depressed. So the contrast is important with only one instrument. Around these piano notes, every theme is developed to match with the scenes.

1 – The Fear: the fear theme has an important presence of string and orchestral instruments to give the possibility to have fast and strong attack, having a squeaky and an irritant aspect that can scare and sneak up. Violins inspired by score like Psycho d’Alfred Hitchcock give a stressful rhythm to the scene. The rhythmical aspect plays a significant role with an important work on spatialization from electronic drums (TR-606) and acoustic drum (Timbales). With these, the result is louder, stressful and more aggressive.

2 – The Joy: The joy theme is inspired of Tame Impala sonority: Something really liquid (with lot of reverb, delay et stereo effects), something cool that has a vibe role and that follow the move and the dance from the character. Guitars are really wavy; the bass play the most important melody with accentuated notes and funky notes from the organ provides to reach the surf genre. All are always followed by the principal melody by the piano.

3 – The Disgust: the disgust theme can easily reach the fear, that’s why it’s important to choose the right instrument. With a green colorimetry and a forest landscape, I was inspired by “jungle melody” with a dynamic rhythmic played by bongos and xylophone. Some floating synths characterised by tremolos are detuned to give disturbing and irritating aspect.

4 – The Liberty: The liberty theme is a typical movie score composed by orchestral strings, winds and woods to give a warm, aerial and epic feeling. Background choir are used to match with liberty shouts. To finish, cymbals accentuation gives more energy between every part to create a scene really epic!

The Outro finish on the slowed principal melody that end on 3 high piano notes that give accentuation on the final revelation and to finish on something satisfying.

It’s with all these instrument that the goal has been completed: the spectator had the possibility to pass by all the emotion!
